Embracing the Fall Season: White Chicken Chili Recipe

By Jan Carpenter

As the fall season approaches, it’s a wonderful time to shift our diet and activities to align with the natural rhythms of nature. In Chinese medicine, this period is perfect for enriching our yin and calming our yang. Cooler seasons are linked with the Kidneys, which store our body’s essential energy. By harmonizing with the seasons, we support our well-being and help prevent disease.

During this time, rest is crucial for revitalizing our Kidney energy, much like how animals slow down or hibernate. It’s also an opportune moment for introspection through practices like meditation and journaling. These activities help connect us to our inner selves and support Kidney energy, calming the mind, soothing emotions, and uplifting the spirit.

Foods for the Cooler Seasons

Eating foods that naturally grow in the cooler seasons is beneficial for our bodies. Root vegetables, winter greens, squashes, apples, pears, and mushrooms are ideal choices. Hearty soups and rich stocks, particularly those made with bones, are perfect for nourishing and warming the body during these months.

Foods that specifically support Kidney health and warmth include:

  • Black beans
  • Kidney beans
  • Bone broths
  • Lamb
  • Chicken
  • Walnuts
  • Chestnuts
  • Dark leafy greens
  • Goji berries
  • Nuts
  • Goat cheese

In addition to these foods, a touch of unrefined sea salt can be beneficial, as the Kidney organ is associated with a salty taste. However, remember to use salt in moderation.

Cooking methods that involve longer cooking times with low heat and less water help to infuse foods with warmth, which is ideal for the cooler seasons. Hearty soups, whole grains, and roasted nuts provide nourishment and support Kidney health, so today, Jan, the face of our front desk, will be sharing one of her favorite, easy fall recipes!
